Technology Preparedness
The recent attack on GoDaddy proves yet again that technology preparedness has to be a certainty. No matter how the attack happened the reality is that it was not that complicated to take down a company the size of GoDaddy.
Given the nature of what GoDaddy does the attack also took down a large number of small businesses. There were many reports that people could not run there businesses and could not send emails all because they were tied to the services that were affected.
The dependence on technology for everything in your business allows you to compete in many areas that you would not ordinarily not have a chance in. That means your technology preparedness has to be solid. What will happen to your business if it is shut down for 3 weeks due to technical failures? There are many people rethinking that today as they dealt without email and software yesterday during the outage.
The outage that GoDaddy had was not that complex and could happen almost anywhere. There are great technology preparedness lessons to learn. If you are dependent on technology than you need to have some redundancy built in. I would also make sure that I gave some serious thought to choosing my provider based on cost. These lessons apply to every facet of your life and just not technology.
