Amateur Radio
There are some things that just work together and in my opinion amateur radio and community service have that relationship. Earning my ham radio license was an important step in my preparations as I wanted to be able to reach out and communicate. I was also interested in the basic principles of amateur radio. What I did not count on was the fellowship and community service that seems to permeate amateur radio.
Much like the relationship between peanut butter and jelly in a sandwich amateur radio and community service are intertwined. During a natural disaster when 911 fails you will see a gathering of ham radio folks providing the communication that is needed. Those guys prepare and practice to make sure they will be there. Even the hams that don’t venture out of the house can provide the much needed communication.
The number of people that are capable of reaching out and communicating with the world with just two radios and antennas from their house is amazing. These people can and do pass messages when needed to save lives. Have you ever thought about what they do when their help is not needed? They are still out there making those contacts with others.
Give me a group of amateur radio operators and I have learned that you have the basis for a functioning team. They will work together and make things happen despite their political leanings. The common denominator is their love for communication. They understand the need for talking and listening. You would be amazed at the civilized discussions that take place on the majority of bands.
Given what our current societal state reflects I think what we need is more people to join the amateur radio operators by getting their ticket and embracing the foundational beliefs. You will find a group of people that know how to effectively communicate and have a deep applied knowledge of community service. If you have a license please feel free to weigh in with your comments. If you want to learn more about the hobby please let me know and I will do whatever I can do.
