Respect to Veterans Everyday
Some people would say this post is a day late, but in reality it should be respect to veterans everyday. We owe them gratitude for their service and sacrifice. The long deployments and training can take a toll on the loved ones as well. I admire the businesses that give a veteran a free meal, but I am not one for the sales.
I personally do not like the commercialization of veterans day and encourage a boycott similar to the Black Friday one that I will be participating in again this year. There is not a day that goes by that we should not pay respect to veterans everyday. Sadly this has not always been the case.
There was a time in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s that we did not treat our veterans very well that were coming home from Southeast Asia. I saw a great tribute that I can not find where a little girl approached a soldier in uniform in a restaurant. The soldier hardly had time to eat his meal as people wished him well. All this happened while a Vietnam Vet sat at the bar eating a meal while no one acknowledged him.
The little girl got her chance to thank the soldier for being a hero and the soldier who had noticed the tattoo of the Vietnam Vet on the way in told her that she should tell a real hero thanks. There are many heroes in our country and those in the military deserve praise and admiration for what they do. I hope that we never show veterans the dishonor that a large majority of veterans were shown when they came home the jungles of Southeast Asia.
From the jungles of Southeast Asia to the mountains in Afghanistan all the way back to the Regulators we owe a debt of gratitude to our veterans and one day is not enough. Respect to veterans everyday should be the rule.
